Electronic Materials Office (EMO) has officially announced the Altar II, a desktop keyboard housed inside a CNC-machined aluminum chassis measuring 4.75 millimeters in thickness. Designed primarily for macOS setups while retaining Windows compatibility, the device bridges the gap between travel-friendly slim keyboards and full-size desktop mechanical setups.
To achieve such a low profile without resorting to squishy membrane layers or laptop-style scissor mechanisms, engineers redesigned internal key mechanics from the ground up. Instead of positioning tension springs vertically underneath each keycap, EMO mounted dual steel arm scissor switches with sideways-oriented springs, achieving 1.8mm of tactile key travel within the ultra-narrow enclosure.
Modular Dial and Daily Usability Features
Beyond its core switch architecture, the Altar II introduces several practical features tailored for everyday productivity and quiet workspaces:
- M-Dial Control: A detachable magnetic rotary knob positioned in the upper corner handles volume and media adjustments using haptic clicks, while EMO supplies 3D-printable files for custom cap designs.
- Acoustic Damping: A specialized silicone internal layer paired with an oversized bottom footpad absorbs keystroke vibrations inside the single-block aluminum shell.
- Power and Lighting: The device connects via dual Bluetooth 5.0 LE channels or USB-C, offering up to 30 days of battery life alongside a night-vision-friendly red LED backlight.
Crowdfunding Strategy and Market Outlook
The commercial rollout for the Altar II relies on an early reservation model ahead of its official Kickstarter launch on 10 November 2026. Prospective buyers can place a refundable $1 deposit to lock in an initial price of $249, while standard campaign backers will pay between $279 and $299 before retail pricing settles at $349 upon summer 2027 delivery.
By combining eco-conscious REGEN polymer keycaps made from 50% recycled material with open-source dial customizability, EMO is testing whether everyday computer users will pay a premium to eliminate the compromise between ergonomic mechanical feel and desktop minimalism.
