Setting toggle arrives in Gemini and Flow
Google has rolled out a new control option within its generative media suite that allows users to remove visible watermarks from AI-generated outputs. Announced by Vice President for Gemini Josh Woodward on 14 August 2026, the update gives users direct control over whether a visible badge appears on synthesized media.
The new setting is accessible directly through Settings > Media Watermark, enabling instant toggling across generated images, synthetic video clips, and audio tracks created within the Google ecosystem.
Model coverage and open-source validation
The visibility switch spans Google's primary generative foundation architectures, ensuring consistent controls across different creative mediums:
- Nano Banana for lightweight image generation and rapid visual prototyping
- Omni for multimodal asset creation across mixed input formats
- Lyria for generative audio composition and sound synthesis
The setting is already live inside Gemini and Google's dedicated AI video editor, Flow, with integration into Google Search expected shortly. To ensure external developers can audit media authenticity locally, Google is also open-sourcing Credentio, a lightweight C++ library designed to parse C2PA metadata directly within client applications.
Stealth SynthID math keeps provenance intact
Stripping the visible logo might seem like a concession to unrestricted AI media, but Google's safety architecture relies on a far more sophisticated layer. Rather than relying on easily cropped pixels, the underlying models embed SynthID, an algorithm that weaves mathematical patterns directly into the latent structure of images, video frames, and audio frequencies.
Speaking on the shift, Josh Woodward explained that «we’re striking a balance here between creative control and safety: while the visible watermarks are now optional, invisible SynthID watermarks and C2PA metadata are still being used for transparency.» This means digital media maintains its clean visual presentation for design work while allowing automated platforms to verify origin instantly, ensuring that covert detection remains completely intact behind a seamless user experience.
