New Stargate Series Cancelled by Amazon MGM Despite Fan Hope

A highly anticipated new Stargate television series has been officially cancelled at Amazon MGM Studios. The project, which was under development for Prime Video and spearheaded by creator Martin Gero, will not move forward. This decision comes despite the franchise's massive legacy and deep dedication from its fanbase. While disappointing news for fans, reports indicate that Amazon remains interested in exploring future Stargate content.

The cancellation of the new Stargate series marks a significant setback for long-time science fiction enthusiasts. The project was being developed by Martin Gero, who previously served as a co-producer on spin-offs like Stargate: Atlantis and Stargate: Universe. According to Space, which cited reports from Variety, Amazon has elected not to proceed with the series after extensive development work.

Concerns Over Audience Appeal

The primary reason for the cancellation reportedly stemmed from internal concerns at Amazon MGM Studios. A source quoted by Variety indicated that executive leadership worried Gero's vision might lack broad appeal outside of the franchise’s already dedicated fanbase. This assessment was met with pushback from Joseph Mallozzi, showrunner of Stargate SG-1, who stated on X: "Nope. No. Sorry. Gonna have to push back on this. We were ever mindful of creating a show that would have broad appeal."

Gero had previously framed his project as an evolution rather than a reboot in interviews with the Stargate podcast, stating it was "not here to undo what came before." The series was still in its early stages of development when the decision was made.

The Legacy of Stargate

The franchise itself boasts an extensive and successful history. The original Stargate SG-1 debuted on television in 1997, stemming from a 1994 Roland Emmerich film. This foundational series ran for 10 seasons between 1997 and 2007, accumulating 214 episodes.

  • SG-1: The original run established the core team, including Colonel Jack O'Neill (Richard Dean Anderson) and Daniel Jackson (Michael Shanks), tasked with exploring the galaxy through the Stargate.
  • Atlantis: This successful spin-off ran for 5 seasons, producing 99 episodes of its own.
  • Universe: The third series struggled to find a consistent audience, concluding after only 2 seasons in 2011.

Despite the cancellation of Gero’s project, there remains hope for future Stargate content. Amazon is reportedly still interested in exploring the franchise, and Martin Gero himself will continue to develop show ideas as part of a larger ongoing deal with Amazon MGM Studios. The decision highlights the complex balance streaming services must strike between catering to niche, dedicated fanbases and achieving mass market appeal.
