According to Forbes, Mortal Kombat II is making the jump to digital streaming this week after a challenging initial theatrical release. The film, based on Midway Games’ classic video game, follows Lord Raiden and Sonya Blade as they recruit Johnny Cage to face the evil Emperor Shao Kahn in a high-stakes tournament for Earthrealm.
Theatrical Performance and Financial Outlook
The sequel opened on May 8th across 3,503 theaters. While it achieved a worldwide gross of $128 million—comprising $79.1 million in North America and $48.9 million internationally—its theatrical footprint quickly shrank to 478 venues by Friday. The film carried an estimated production budget of $80 million before marketing costs.
Since studios typically split ticket sales 50-50 with theater owners, the studio stood to gain approximately $40 million from box office receipts alone. This means Warner Bros. Discovery must now rely heavily on PVOD sales and rentals to recoup the remaining production budget, marketing expenses, residuals, and other associated costs.
Digital and Physical Media Rollout
Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment announced that Mortal Kombat II will be available for purchase via PVOD on Tuesday, June 9th, for $24.99 across platforms like Apple TV and Prime Video. Digital rentals are set at $19.99 for a 48-hour period.
In addition to the digital release, the film is scheduled for physical media distribution in July. On July 28th, Mortal Kombat II will arrive on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD formats. The high-definition releases are expected to include five production featurettes that delve into the creation of the saga.
- Evolving the Saga: Behind-the-scenes looks at returning characters and new alliances.
- Building the Realms of Mortal Kombat: Insights into how practical sets and VFX created Edenia and the Pit.
- Choose Your Fighter: Exploration of the cast, brutal weapons, and intense training required for character realization.
The shift to streaming marks a common trend in modern cinema distribution, where studios leverage multiple release windows to maximize revenue after initial theatrical exposure. The availability across both digital rental/purchase and physical media ensures continued consumer engagement with the franchise.
