The countdown is complete for the official Steam Early Access debut of Camelot Unchained. According to Massivelyop, the MMORPG RvR sandbox, which was initially pitched to Kickstarter backers in 2013, begins its early access phase this afternoon. The game represents a massive undertaking, incorporating elements reminiscent of classic titles like Warhammer Online and Dark Age of Camelot, focusing heavily on large-scale player vs. player combat.

Current Scope and Core Features

The current iteration of the game provides players with a substantial foundation for an MMORPG experience. It features three distinct realms, nine races, seven archetypes, and 10 classes. Each class is supported by three unique skill trees, while the world map includes three home zones and three contested zones designed for conflict.

  • The core gameplay loop supports guilds, parties, and warbands, allowing players to organize large-scale groups.
  • Players can engage in gathering and crafting activities using multiple materials available across the realms.
  • Basic functionality for the user interface (UI) is fully implemented, providing a functional starting point for new testers.

Future Vision: The Path to Full Release

Unchained Games has stated that the title will remain in Early Access until it meets their standard for a complete user experience, currently targeting December 2026 for its full release. Mark Jacobs and his team have outlined several major expansions planned for this period.

The development roadmap includes significant additions to combat depth and character customization. The studio is actively working toward reaching a total of 10 archetypes, with each archetype housing its own unique class variation per Realm. Furthermore, the progression system is being revamped to offer meaningful choices, ensuring that every character can be specialized and unique.

Advanced RvR Mechanics and Monetization

Beyond character depth, the game will see advanced RvR mechanics introduced. These include siege weapons, expanded benefits for capturing various Points of Interest (PoI), and a broader variety of environments across multiple new zones. A dedicated endgame zone is planned to challenge players with the toughest encounters and offer access to the highest quality materials.

Regarding monetization, while no subscription model exists during early access, Unchained Games has confirmed that the final version will feature a subscription structure. The game is expected to split into two editions: a 'base edition' and an upgraded 'war unending' version, which will carry a higher price point. Early access itself is priced at $10.

After years of development—including entering its "beta one" phase in 2018 with 3000 humans and bots on the battlefield simultaneously—the arrival of Camelot Unchained on Steam represents the culmination of a long, complex journey for the studio. The game is now available to players eager to test its massive RvR sandbox.
