Peddi Debuts Amid Objectification Controversy; Director Agrees to

The independent film Peddi, which debuted as the top Telugu opener of 2026 in India, faced a social media controversy upon its North American release. Critics accused the movie of objectifying its female lead, Janhvi Kapoor. In an unusual industry move, writer-director Buchi Babu Sana agreed to modify certain scenes following public feedback. The film opened successfully at $1.1 million across 755 locations.

According to Deadline, the rural drama Peddi, set in Andhra Pradesh during the 1980s, has generated significant discussion since its debut. Starring Ram Charan as a spirited villager and Janhvi Kapoor as his love interest, the film was marketed as a light romance centered on community sports. However, social media outcry intensified regarding specific elements of the production.

Public Backlash Leads to Production Changes

The controversy stemmed from multiple instances cited by Indian press reports, including certain dialogue choices, moments where the camera lingered excessively on Kapoor’s figure, and a forced kiss between the leads despite the film's intended tone. In response to this rising protest, Buchi Babu Sana issued a statement on X (formerly Twitter), acknowledging the feedback.

Sana stated: “As a filmmaker, I believe cinema should entertain, inspire, and connect with audiences. It should never make anyone feel uncomfortable or disrespected. We have heard the feedback regarding certain scenes in Peddi and have taken it seriously.”

North American Box Office Performance

Despite the social media debate, Peddi achieved a strong opening weekend in North America. The film opened to $1.1 million at 755 locations, with its cumulative gross pushing $3 million when including Thursday screenings, as tracked by Rentrak (formerly Comscore). This performance places it among several other notable independent releases currently running in the U.S.

Other Notable Indie Releases

The current theatrical landscape features a mix of critically acclaimed and commercially successful titles. Among them:

  • Obsession, also from Focus Features, continues its strong run into week 3, maintaining an estimated gross of $25.6 million domestically with no signs of slowing down.
  • Backrooms, released by A24, has achieved a cumulative domestic total of $135 million across 3,565 theaters in week 2.
  • The action film Tuner, directed by Daniel Roher and starring Leo Woodall, continued its run, grossing $650k from 504 locations for an estimated cume of $3.1 million.
  • I Love Boosters from Neon is performing well in week 3 on 300 screens, accumulating a cume of $8.6 million.

The willingness of the director to address public concerns highlights a growing dynamic between independent cinema and social media accountability. The film’s initial success suggests that while controversy can arise, audience interest remains high for culturally rooted narratives.
