According to Cio, Samsung Electronics is moving away from its previously restrictive stance on external generative AI tools. The electronics giant will now officially provide employees within its DX Division with access to three leading platforms: ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude. This move follows a period of caution where the company relied primarily on internal models due to fears regarding corporate data security.
Strategic shift toward AX initiative
The decision to embrace these global tech giants' services is a core component of Samsung’s broader "AI Transformation" (AX) strategy. This initiative was championed by Chairman Lee Jae-yong, who called for a fundamental transformation of the company's organizational DNA and work methods at the start of this year. By integrating AI into every facet of the business—from research and development to marketing and support functions—Samsung aims to move beyond viewing AI as a simple tool and instead treat it as a foundational shift in how work is executed.
The company selected these specific models after a rigorous verification process involving approximately 2,500 employees. This testing phase was designed to evaluate the effectiveness of different candidates in real-world scenarios. Samsung stated that offering all three services allows staff to choose the optimal tool for their specific tasks rather than forcing a one-size-fits-all solution.
Executive training and organizational culture
To ensure the success of this transition, Samsung is launching an intensive educational program known as the "AX Boot Camp." This initiative will target approximately 50 executives across various affiliated companies to improve AI literacy at the leadership level. The company believes that executive understanding is critical for the successful adoption of new technologies.
Roh Tae-moon, president and representative of Samsung Electronics, highlighted the scope of this transition during the announcement:The adoption of external generative AI is not simply providing AI as a work tool, but rather a starting point for fundamentally transforming how we work and our execution speed.
Key objectives of the AX initiative include:
- Improving overall work productivity across all departments.
- Accelerating decision-making speeds within the corporate structure.
- Elevating organizational execution capabilities to a higher competitive level.
- Integrating AI into the entire value chain, including production and R&D.
By moving from a defensive posture regarding data leaks to an active adoption phase, Samsung is attempting to balance security with the necessity of remaining competitive in an increasingly automated global market.
