Toyota and Lexus Prepare to Launch Three-Row Electric SUVs by End of

Toyota and Lexus are preparing for a major expansion into the three-row electric SUV market. The Highlander BEV and the luxury Lexus TZ will both go on sale by the end of 2026, offering substantial space and modern EV capabilities. These vehicles leverage the TNGA platform while introducing advanced powertrains and premium features designed to compete in the growing family EV segment.

Toyota and Lexus are set to redefine the three-row electric SUV category with the upcoming Highlander BEV and the high-end Lexus TZ. Based on the same robust TNGA platform utilized by the Toyota Grand Highlander BEV, these new models promise a blend of practical capacity and advanced electrification. According to Electrek, the Lexus TZ will be available with two battery options—76.96 kWh and 95.82 kWh lithium-ion packs—providing a driving range of up to 300 miles.

Performance and Drivetrain Capabilities

While the Highlander BEV is expected to achieve a slightly higher maximum range of up to 320 miles with its larger battery, the Lexus TZ emphasizes performance. The luxury model will feature an upgraded DIRECT4 AWD system as standard across all trims. This dual-motor setup delivers a combined output of 420 horsepower and maintains a towing capacity of up to 3,500 lbs.

The "evolved" DIRECT4 AWD is engineered for precision handling, distributing torque between the front and rear motors based on real-time road conditions. The system allows drivers five distinct drive modes—normal, sport, eco, range, and rear comfort—and dynamically adjusts torque ratios during acceleration and cornering to optimize performance.

  • The Lexus TZ utilizes an advanced DIRECT4 AWD system for precise torque distribution.
  • It offers a combined output of 420 horsepower and can tow up to 3,500 lbs.
  • Torque ratios adjust from 60:40 to 0:100 during acceleration to maximize traction.

Luxury Design and Interior Technology

Beyond performance metrics, the Lexus TZ introduces a "Driving Lounge" concept, which aims to blend traditional lounge comfort with the brand’s signature driving experience. The cabin is designed to be exceptionally quiet, incorporating added sound-absorbing materials and a reinforced body structure.

The interior technology features the latest Lexus Interface multimedia system, equipped with customizable widgets and an improved "Hey Lexus" Voice Assistant. New EV functions, including EV Routing and EV Range Map, are integrated into the digital cluster. Furthermore, the TZ includes several unique luxury touches not typically found in Lexus SUVs:

  • An Active Sound Control (ASC) system that replicates the feeling of a traditional internal combustion engine shifting.
  • Ventilated and power-adjustable ottomans available for the front passenger and second-row captain’s seats.

Measuring 200.8″ in length, the TZ is sized comparably to competitors such as Hyundai’s IONIQ 9 and Volvo EX90, positioning it directly against other premium three-row electric vehicles entering the market.

The introduction of these highly capable electric SUVs signals Toyota and Lexus's serious commitment to capturing a larger share of the rapidly evolving family EV segment by the end of 2026.
